Activity Overview

Overlanding is the best way to see how varied Morocco is. Our multi-day expeditions run from the Mediterranean coast to the Sahara and from the Rif Mountains to the Atlantic. Along the way you visit imperial cities, Berber villages and nomadic camps, and cross a lot of remote country in between. It is a long trip by design. The point is to watch the country change around you, one region at a time.

Our overland expeditions last from 4 to 14 days, with options for different levels of adventure. We handle the logistics (accommodation, meals, vehicles and guides) so you can concentrate on the trip itself.

Why Overland?

Travelling overland lets you see more of Morocco and spend longer with it. You watch the land shift from coast to mountain to desert and meet people from different regions. By the end you have a much fuller picture of the country than a single stop can give.

The country as one long journey

Overlanding means travelling a long route by vehicle, letting the journey itself be the point. In Morocco that journey can start on the Mediterranean, climb through cedar forest, cross a mountain pass, follow a palm valley into the Sahara and finish on the Atlantic. Few countries pack so much variety into a route you can drive in two weeks.

Guided overland trips

You can join one of our grand expeditions in our 4x4s, from six to fourteen days, or travel in your own vehicle with a guide leading. Shorter options from the north, such as the Tangier to Sahara expedition, suit travellers arriving by ferry. Every route mixes tarmac with pistes, so you see villages and landscapes off the usual circuit.

Planning your route

Think about the season first: spring and autumn are best, winter brings snow to the Atlas, and summer is very hot in the south. Then decide how many nights you want in camps versus hotels. Our overlanding guide covers fuel, documents and road rules, while the 4x4 guide focuses on driving off the tarmac.

Highlights along the way

Expect Chefchaouen's blue lanes, the Middle Atlas cedar forest, the Ziz gorge, the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the Todra and Dades gorges and the kasbahs around Ouarzazate. In the desert, park the vehicle and ride a quad or sleep in a desert camp. Travelling with a camper? See off-road campers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A guide can lead in one of our 4x4s while you follow, which makes the off-road sections far easier.

A north-to-south route with time in the desert takes at least six days; ten to fourteen days lets you add the gorges, the Atlas and the coast without long driving days.

You need your registration papers, valid insurance for Morocco (a green card or local cover bought at the border) and your licence. Our overlanding guide lists the details.
