Detailed Itinerary
Pre-Dawn Departure
The guide collects you from your hotel while it is still dark, roughly an hour and a half before sunrise. The air is cool, so bring a warm layer. At our base you get your helmet, goggles and a short briefing under the last stars.
You set off slowly with lights on along the edge of the dunes. The desert at this hour is completely quiet, and many guests say this calm start is the best part of the morning.
Dune Navigation
As the sky in the east begins to lighten, the guide leads you into Erg Chebbi. The sand is firmer after the night, which makes the climbs easier, and you have the dunes almost to yourselves.
The route heads to a high dune facing east. You park below the crest and walk the last part, choosing a spot to sit and wait as the horizon turns pink and orange.
Sunrise & Return
The sun appears above the hamada and lights the tops of the dunes first, then spills down into the valleys. Colours change minute by minute, which makes this the favourite time for photographers.
After the sunrise you ride back to base through the warming dunes. If you chose the optional breakfast, it is served after the ride. Your guide then drops you back at your hotel, often before most visitors have even woken up.
