Why choose a buggy over a quad?

A dune buggy feels more like a car: you sit in a seat, wear a harness and steer with a wheel, inside a steel roll cage. That makes it the easiest way to tackle big dunes if you have never ridden a motorbike, and the natural choice for couples who want to ride side by side. The two-seat buggies have automatic gearboxes and long-travel suspension, so they climb the soft ridges of Erg Chebbi without much effort from the driver.

Families often mix vehicles: one parent in a buggy with a child, the other on a quad. If nobody wants to drive at all, a 4x4 desert tour covers similar ground with a driver.

Our buggy tours, by length

  • The 1 hour buggy tour is a short, fun loop through the first dune ridges. Ideal before or after a camel ride.
  • The 2 hour buggy tour adds a high viewpoint and a tea stop with a nomad family.
  • The 3 hour buggy tour reaches the far side of the erg, where the dunes are bigger and there are few other vehicles.
  • The full day buggy adventure circles Erg Chebbi with lunch, the Khamlia music village and old mining tracks.

Driving tips from our guides

Keep a steady speed on climbs; stopping halfway up a soft slope is what gets buggies stuck. Approach a crest slowly, because you cannot see the other side until you are on top. Follow the guide's tracks, which are chosen for firm sand. Wear sunglasses or the goggles we provide, and tie back long hair. These are the same habits we teach in our beginner's driving guide.

Who can drive

No driving licence is needed: you get full instruction before you set off, and the guide leads every metre of the route. Passengers can be younger if the harness fits them properly, and a passenger rides free or at a reduced rate. If anyone in the group has back problems or is pregnant, tell us when you book and we will suggest a gentler route or a 4x4.

Not sure which length suits your plans? Read our Merzouga guide for how much time to spend in the desert, check the vehicles we use, or ask us directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are safe with a guide. A buggy has a roll cage, seat belts and four wheels on the ground, so it feels more stable to first-timers. A quad needs a little more balance but is more agile.

Yes, as passengers, if they are tall enough for the harness to fit across the shoulder. An adult drives, and no licence is required.

Our buggies seat two: one driver and one passenger. Larger groups use several buggies together with one guide leading.
