Rider on a quad bike on a desert track in Morocco

Activity Overview

Quad biking is one of the liveliest ways to get around the Sahara. At Roadless Morocco we run guided quad tours across the dunes of Erg Chebbi, over open desert plains and along old nomadic trails. First-time riders are welcome, and experienced off-roaders will find enough to keep them busy. Each ride mixes speed and scenery with a chance to learn something about the people and culture of the desert.

On a quad you get the fun of off-road riding and can reach ground that bigger vehicles cannot. Our quads are modern and well maintained, and they suit riders of all experience levels. Our guides make sure each ride is safe.

Why Quad Biking in Morocco?

Morocco has some of the best quad biking terrain anywhere. Around Merzouga the Sahara gives you tall dunes, hard-packed plains and winding trails through palm oases. Soft sand one minute and rocky plateau the next means no two rides feel the same.

Our Quad Biking Tours

Our quad tours last from one hour to a full day, and there are sunrise and sunset departures. Every tour includes a professional guide, safety equipment and hotel pickup.

What riding a quad in the Sahara feels like

The first minutes are on flat, hard sand while you get used to the thumb throttle. Then the guide turns toward the dunes and the ground starts to move: soft ridges, long slopes and bowls where the quad floats rather than grips. Most people are surprised how quickly it becomes natural. By the end of an hour, riders who were nervous at the start are asking for the next big dune.

Erg Chebbi is the right place to learn because the dunes rise gradually from the plain. You can stay on the gentle outer ridges or head into the centre, where dunes reach their highest. Our quad biking tours range from a one-hour taster to a full day around the whole erg.

Routes beyond the dunes

Quads are not only for sand. Longer rides cross the black-stone hamada east of the dunes, the dry lake bed that sometimes fills after winter rain, and old tracks to the Khamlia music village. On these mixed routes you feel the difference between surfaces and learn to read the ground ahead, the same skills described in our quad driving guide.

Choosing the right time of day

Light changes everything in the desert. Morning rides are cool and the sand is firmer after the night. Late afternoon rides end with sunset from a high dune, which is why the sunset quad tour fills up first. In the hottest months we avoid the middle of the day entirely.

Quad or something else?

If you prefer a seat and a steering wheel, try a buggy tour. If you want to cover longer distances in comfort, a 4x4 expedition suits better. Many visitors combine a short quad ride with a night in a desert camp. Read the full Merzouga quad biking guide for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

On sand, most of the ride is at a calm 20 to 35 km/h. Speed is less important than steady throttle on climbs, and the guide sets a pace that suits the slowest rider.

It happens, and it is part of the fun. Release the throttle, the guide shows you how to rock the quad free or helps push it back onto firm sand.

Not while moving, but the guide stops at viewpoints for photos and will happily take pictures of you riding. A phone in a zipped pocket is safest.
