Best Time for Sahara Adventures: Seasonal Guide

Best Time for Sahara Adventures: Seasonal Guide – Travel Tips travel guide by Roadless Morocco

When you go to the Sahara changes the whole trip. Pick the right season and the temperatures are pleasant; pick the wrong one and you face fierce heat or cold nights. Here is how the year looks from Merzouga, season by season.

Winter (December-February): The Peak Season

Most visitors come in winter. Days sit between 15-22°C, which is ideal for being outdoors. At night it can fall to 0-5°C, so pack warm layers. This is the best period for full-day tours and multi-day expeditions.

Pros: Ideal daytime temperatures, clear skies
Cons: Cold nights, busiest season

Spring (March-May): The Sweet Spot

Many people would call spring the best season of all. It is warm without being hot (25-30°C), wildflowers bloom in the desert and the light is beautiful. Photographers and anyone planning outdoor activities do well at this time of year.

Pros: Ideal temperatures, blooming desert, fewer crowds
Cons: Occasional sandstorms in spring

Summer (June-August): The Challenge

Summer is extreme. Temperatures regularly go above 45°C, and we do not recommend full-day tours. If summer is your only option, plan activities for early morning (before 9 AM) or evening (after 5 PM). Sunrise and sunset tours still run, and the dunes look their best in that low light.

Pros: No crowds, cheapest prices
Cons: Extreme heat, limited activity times

Autumn (September-November): The Second Peak

Autumn is another very good time to come. Temperatures ease back to 25-30°C, the light turns golden and the summer crowds have gone. October and November are especially pleasant.

Pros: Warm but not hot, beautiful light, fewer crowds
Cons: Can still be warm in September

Frequently Asked Questions

It is too hot for full-day activities, as summer temperatures exceed 45°C. Early morning and evening tours are still possible.

Pack layers: warm clothes for cold nights and light clothes for warm days. A warm jacket, hat and gloves are essential for nights in the desert.

Summer (June-August) is the cheapest because demand is low. The extreme heat does make most activities hard, though.
