Tour Overview
The Chefchaouen to Desert Adventure is a four-day off-road trip linking two very different parts of Morocco: the blue-washed mountain town of Chefchaouen and the dunes of the Sahara. On the way you cross the Rif Mountains, stop at Roman ruins and drive through the gorges of the Middle Atlas. The last leg brings you to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It is a good fit if you want northern Morocco's towns and culture as well as the desert, in one route.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Chefchaouen to Fes
Your driver-guide meets you in Chefchaouen after breakfast. If you have time, take a last short walk through the blue lanes of the medina before loading the 4x4. The road then leaves the Rif behind, winding south through green hills, olive groves and small market towns toward Ouezzane and the wide farmland of the Gharb.
Around midday you reach Volubilis, the best preserved Roman site in Morocco. You walk among the columns, the triumphal arch and the floor mosaics still lying where they were laid, with the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun on the hillside opposite. After a lunch stop nearby, the drive continues through rolling farmland to Fes, where you arrive in the late afternoon. Your guide takes you to your riad in or near the old medina, and the evening is yours to rest after a full day on the road.
Day 2: Fes to Merzouga
This is the long crossing from the north to the Sahara, and every hour the landscape changes. You climb out of Fes into the Middle Atlas, passing Ifrane with its sloping roofs and tidy parks, then into the cedar forest near Azrou, where Barbary macaques often wait by the road. A short stop lets you see them and stretch your legs under the trees.
The road continues over high plateaus to Midelt, a good place for lunch with the Jbel Ayachi range behind the town. After the Tizi n'Talghemt pass the country turns dry and red, and you follow the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves cut deep into the rock. Past Errachidia and Erfoud, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon. You arrive in Merzouga in the early evening, ready for dinner and a quiet night.
Day 3: Sahara Exploration
Today is spent entirely around Erg Chebbi. In the morning you head into the dunes by quad, buggy or 4x4, depending on what you prefer, with a guide who knows the sand well. The route climbs over ridges with wide views, then drops to the stony plain where fossils of ancient sea creatures lie in the rock.
You visit a nomad family for mint tea, then stop in Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa musicians, whose rhythms came across the Sahara from West Africa long ago. After lunch and a rest through the hottest hours, you can visit the market town of Rissani or simply relax. In the late afternoon you ride or walk up a high dune to watch the sun go down over the sand sea. The night is spent in a desert camp, with dinner, music around the fire and a sky full of stars.
Day 4: Sunrise & Departure
Get up early and climb the dune behind camp while it is still dark. As the sky lightens, the ridges of Erg Chebbi turn from grey to pink and then deep orange, and the silence of the desert at this hour is something most guests remember long after the trip. Take your time; there is no rush to come down.
Back at camp, breakfast is served, then you return to Merzouga by 4x4 or on foot across the sand, with a chance to shower and pack. This is where the tour ends. If you are travelling on, your guide can talk you through the options for continuing west toward the Dades Valley and Marrakech or back north to Fes, and help you plan the next part of your journey.
