The Tangier to Merzouga 4x4 Tour is a six-day drive across Morocco, from the northern tip of the country to the Sahara. It combines time in towns and cities with off-road driving. Along the way you visit Chefchaouen, Fes and the Middle Atlas Mountains before reaching the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It is a good choice if you want to see how varied Morocco is in less than a week.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Tangier to Chefchaouen
Your driver-guide meets you in Tangier, often right after you arrive in Morocco. The first drive is a gentle introduction to the country: green hills, cork oak forest and roadside stalls selling fruit and bread. On the way you can stop in Tetouan for a short walk in its white medina, a reminder of the Andalusian families who built much of the old town.
The road then climbs into the Rif Mountains, and by early afternoon you reach Chefchaouen. After settling into your riad, spend the rest of the day wandering the blue lanes, sitting in the main square below the old kasbah, or walking up to the small Spanish mosque on the hillside for sunset over the town. It is a calm, easy first day before the long distances ahead.
Day 2: Chefchaouen to Fes
After breakfast you leave the mountains and drive south through the hills around Ouezzane and into the open farmland of the Gharb. The landscape softens into olive groves and wheat fields, and by late morning you reach Volubilis, once a Roman town at the edge of the empire.
Walking the site with your guide, you see the basilica, the triumphal arch and houses with mosaics still in place, depicting gods, animals and scenes from myth. Across the valley sits Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the town linked to the founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty. After lunch nearby, the drive continues to Fes, where you arrive in the late afternoon. Your guide takes you to your riad, and the evening is free to rest or take a first short look at the old city.
Day 3: Fes to Merzouga
Today you cross the Atlas from north to south, one of the most varied drives in Morocco. Climbing out of Fes, you pass Ifrane, a mountain town with an almost Alpine feel, then enter the cedar forest around Azrou. Barbary macaques live among the trees here, and a short stop usually gives you a close look at them.
The road crosses high open plateaus to Midelt, where you break for lunch under the Jbel Ayachi range. Beyond the Tizi n'Talghemt pass, the land turns dry, and you descend through the Ziz Valley, its palm groves lying deep below red cliffs. After Errachidia and Erfoud, the dunes of Erg Chebbi come into view, glowing in the late light. You arrive in Merzouga in the early evening, with dinner and a well-earned rest.
Day 4: Sahara Exploration
A full day to get to know the desert. In the morning you ride into Erg Chebbi by quad, buggy or 4x4 with your guide, crossing ridges and stopping on high dunes for views across the sand sea. Leaving the sand, you explore the stony plain where ammonites and orthoceras are set in the rock, remains of an ocean that covered this region long ago.
You share mint tea with a nomad family, then visit Khamlia to hear Gnawa music, a tradition carried north across the Sahara by people from West Africa. In the afternoon you can visit the old market town of Rissani and its earth-built ksour, or rest through the heat. As the sun lowers, you head to a desert camp in the dunes, with time to watch the sunset before dinner and an evening around the fire.
Day 5: Deep Desert
Today the 4x4 leaves the familiar area around Erg Chebbi and heads south across the black hamada toward Taouz and the edge of the Algerian border zone. The tracks are rough and empty, and the sense of space is very different from the busier dunes further north.
Along the way your guide shows you old rock engravings on the hills near Taouz, abandoned mining settlements and small seasonal camps where nomad families graze their goats and camels. You stop for a picnic lunch in the shade, then cross smaller, quieter dune fields where you are unlikely to meet anyone else. In the late afternoon you return to a desert camp, often in a more remote spot than the night before. Dinner is served under the stars, and with no lights around, the night sky is especially clear.
Day 6: Sunrise & Departure
Wake before dawn and walk up the nearest dune to watch the sun rise over the Sahara. The first light catches the tops of the ridges, then slowly fills the valleys between them, and the colours change minute by minute. It is a quiet, unhurried moment and a fitting end to the journey.
After breakfast at camp, you return to Merzouga, where you can shower and pack. This is where the tour ends. If you are continuing your trip, your guide can explain the options for heading west through the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley toward Marrakech, or back north to Fes, and help you organise the next stage.
