Sandboarding in the Sahara: A Beginner's Guide
Sandboarding is one of the most fun things to do in the Sahara. Think snowboarding, only on sand, and the high dunes of Erg Chebbi give you plenty of slopes to choose from. Here is how it works and how to try it with us.
What is Sandboarding?
You ride a board down a sand dune, much as you would ride a snowboard down a slope. The boards are made for sand, with a smooth base that slides over the surface. It is fun, fairly easy to pick up and suitable from age 8.
Where to Sandboard in Morocco
Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, has the best sandboarding in the country. Dunes here reach up to 150 meters, so there are runs for every level. The sand is fine and smooth, which is exactly what you want for sliding.
How to Sandboard
- Wax the board: rub sandboard wax on the base so it glides better
- Climb the dune: walk up to the point you want to start from
- Position: stand on the board, feet shoulder-width apart
- Lean forward: put your weight on your front foot
- Slide: let gravity take you down, knees bent
- Stop: lean back a little or turn the board sideways
Tips for Beginners
- Start on smaller dunes and move up to the big ones
- Bend your knees and keep your weight forward
- Wear closed-toe shoes, as the sand gets hot
- Bring sunscreen and water
- Do not worry about falling, because sand is soft
- If standing is too hard, ride sitting down
Is Sandboarding Safe?
Yes, it is very safe. You land on soft sand and the speeds are fairly low. Sunburn and dehydration are the real risks, so cover up and drink plenty of water.
