We visit several oases around Merzouga, and each has its own character and history. Detailed Itinerary
Morning Oases
After hotel pick-up, you drive out of the dunes toward the green heart of the Tafilalet region. The first oases are surprising after the sand: tall date palms, small irrigated fields of alfalfa and vegetables, and paths between earth-walled gardens.
You walk through two oases with your guide, see how the gardens are shared between families and learn about the date varieties grown here. In season, you can taste fresh dates straight from the palm.
Lunch
Lunch is a traditional Berber meal served at a desert camp, with tagine, bread, salad, fruit and mint tea. It is a relaxed stop in the shade, with time to rest.
Your guide is happy to answer questions about the region's farming, markets and history.
Afternoon & Return
In the afternoon you visit a third oasis and a khettara, an old underground water channel dug by hand to carry water from the hills to the fields. You can look down the access shafts and see how the system works.
The drive back to Merzouga passes palm groves and ksour, the fortified earth villages of the area. You return in the late afternoon.

Equipment Information & Vehicle Details
Getting to several palm-grove oases means driving on softer, sometimes muddy tracks near the springs, so our 4x4s are equipped for it and drivers carry a tow rope as a precaution. Bring a swimsuit if you want to wade in the cooler spring pools. The Berber lunch, midway through the day, is served in the shade of the palm groves. Learn more about our fleet.
Safety Information
Rocks and ground around the springs can be slippery, so take care and wear proper shoes rather than sandals near the water. Beyond that, the usual 4x4 basics apply: seatbelts on while moving, and follow the driver's lead on soft or uneven stretches of track between oases. Read our full safety standards.
