Detailed Itinerary
Fossil Beds
Your driver-guide picks you up at your hotel and heads to the stony plains around Erg Chebbi. Hundreds of millions of years ago this was the floor of an ocean, and the rocks are full of the remains of sea life.
At the fossil beds you walk with your guide, looking for ammonites, orthoceras and, with luck, pieces of trilobites. The guide explains how to recognise each one and how old they are.
Workshop Visit
You then visit a local fossil workshop, where craftsmen cut and polish blocks of fossil-rich stone into tables, plates and small souvenirs. You see each step of the process and can ask questions.
It is also a good place to buy an authentic fossil to take home, with no obligation to purchase.
Return
The drive back to Merzouga includes viewpoints over the dunes and the plain. The tour lasts about four hours, ideal for a morning or afternoon.
It pairs well with a sunset quad ride or a night in a desert camp.
